Title: Galaxy Quest
Debut: 1999
Rating: PG
Starring: Tim Allen, Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver, Tony Shalhoub, Justin Long…oh, so many more!
Directed by: Dean Parisot
Summary: (From IMDB): The alumni cast of a cult space TV show have to play their roles as the real thing when an alien race needs their help.
What we fondly remember: How did I miss this one the first time around?! I love everyone in it.
What was refreshing: Fun, fun, fun. At every turn, adults will be delightedly surprised by the appearance of yet another favorite actor or actress, and even the kids will say, ‘Oh, I know him from…’
Red flags: There’s a little bit of language, and there are aliens, but they are so silly looking that all but the youngest kids will be unafraid. Trust me, if our scaredy-cat kids can see it, almost any can.
Kids’ Review: The boys loved this one, once they caught on to the humor behind a band of egotistical actors being asked to save the world for real. I know one aspect of the movie went over their heads: kids who understand the concept of a cult classic TV show and their crazy fans will enjoy it even more. I got a big kick out of the ComicCon-esque setting and the actions of the mega fanboys and fangirls, but I know my kids didn’t quite ‘get’ the pop culture of a Star Trek-like phenom.

Galaxy Quest is one of those movies that I’ll watch whenever I see it being rerun on cable. So, so entertaining. And these days I like the parallels between Tim Allen’s character in GQ and Buzz Lightyear.
But I have to admit, it makes me a little sad that it now qualifies as “retro” – but, hey, it’s 14 years old already! :)

This movie’s hilarious! I did a double-take the first time I watched it and saw Snape walk in :)
